Warm morning scene with tea and leather journal

The morning routine that actually works (when you hate morning routines)

Every morning routine article on the internet involves waking up at 5am, meditating for twenty minutes, journaling, exercising and making a green smoothie before most people have opened their eyes.

That’s not a morning routine. That’s a second job.

Here’s what actually works — especially if you’re someone who finds mornings hard.

Start before you get out of bed

Before you reach for your phone, and I know how hard this is, just lie there for a minute. Look at the ceiling. Let your brain come online slowly. This sounds like nothing but it changes the entire tone of the morning. Your phone can wait sixty seconds.

Make your first drink a ritual

Whether it’s coffee, tea or warm lemon water, make it properly and drink it somewhere nice. I’ve been making green tea every morning using this glass tea maker and it’s become the part of my morning I actually look forward to. The process of making it is almost meditative. The waiting, the warmth, the quiet.

Write one thing down

Not a to-do list. Not a gratitude list with five things. Just one thing, something you noticed, something you’re thinking about, something you want to remember. I keep this journal on my bedside table and it takes less than two minutes. It’s enough to feel like you’ve started the day with intention rather than reaction.

Get dressed properly

Even if you’re working from home. Even if you’re not leaving the house. Getting dressed, in something you actually like wearing — signals to your brain that the day has started. It sounds small. It isn’t.

Give yourself something to look forward to

The morning routine that works is the one that has something in it you actually want to do. A podcast you love. A walk. A good breakfast eaten slowly at the table with a scented candle lit. Something that makes getting up feel worth it rather than something you endure before the real day starts.

You don’t need a perfect morning. You need a morning that feels like yours.
