Cosy minimalist living room with neutral sofa large rug and warm floor lamp in corner

Why your living room doesn’t feel right (and exactly how to fix it)

You’ve rearranged the furniture three times. You’ve bought new cushions. You’ve moved the coffee table. And it still doesn’t feel right.

Here’s the thing — it’s probably not what you have. It’s how it’s arranged.

The sofa is probably in the wrong place

Most people push their sofa against the wall because it feels logical. It’s not. Pulling it even 30cm into the room creates a sense of intention and definition that completely changes the space. Try it before you buy anything new.

You need a rug and it needs to be bigger than you think

The most common decorating mistake is a rug that’s too small. Your sofa legs should sit on it — at least the front two. A properly sized rug grounds the whole room and makes the furniture feel like it belongs together rather than floating separately.

Your lighting is doing the wrong job

If your main light source is an overhead ceiling light you’re going to struggle to make the room feel warm no matter what else you do. Add a floor lamp in the corner, a table lamp on a side table, and switch the overhead off. The room will feel completely different within thirty seconds.

The coffee table needs editing

A coffee table with too much on it feels cluttered. Too little feels cold. The sweet spot is a small stack of books, one object with height — a vase with dried stems works beautifully and a candle. That’s your formula.

Add something living

A plant. Even a small one. Even a fake one if you’re not a plant person. Something that isn’t manufactured, that has an organic shape, that reminds the room it’s connected to the natural world. It makes a difference that’s hard to explain but very easy to feel.

Your living room is where you land at the end of the day. It should feel like relief, not an afterthought.
