Small bedroom styled with large mirror light linen curtains and minimal furniture to feel bigger and more open

The Easiest Way to Make a Small Bedroom Look Bigger (Without Moving a Single Piece of Furniture)

Small bedrooms get a bad reputation. Everyone acts like you need more space when actually what you need is to use the space you have better.

These are the tricks that actually work — no renovation, no moving furniture, no spending a lot of money.

Use a large mirror

A full length mirror leaning against the wall opposite a window bounces light around the room and makes it feel genuinely twice the size. It’s the oldest trick in the book because it works every single time. If your bedroom feels cramped, this is the first thing to try before anything else.

Go light on the walls

Dark colours make a small room feel smaller. Light, warm whites and creams make it feel airy and open. If you can paint — go for a warm white. If you can’t, add light coloured linen curtain that hang from ceiling to floor. Height draws the eye up and makes the room feel taller than it is.

Get your curtains higher than the window

Most people hang curtains at window height. Hang them as close to the ceiling as possible instead. The window looks bigger, the ceiling looks higher and the whole room feels more generous. Same curtains, completely different effect.

Choose furniture with legs

Beds and sofas that sit directly on the floor make a room feel heavy and low. Furniture with visible legs — even just a few inches, lets light travel underneath and makes the room feel lighter and more open. A bed frame with legs makes a small bedroom feel significantly less cramped.

Edit ruthlessly

The real reason small rooms feel small is usually clutter. Not furniture, clutter. A small room with less in it always feels better than a small room with more. Take one thing out and see how the room responds. Then take another. You’ll be surprised how much space was hiding under everything.
